Scientific Outputs

A methodology and a software platform will be developed in order to implement the innovative industrial symbiosis model in a feasible scenario of industrial symbiosis synergies between industries (steel, aluminium, natural stone, chemical and demolition and construction sectors) and stakeholders in the extended construction value chain. Industrial by-products and wastes will be used as secondary raw materials between different sectors such as cement, ceramic etc. In case the project outputs are applied at the European Union level in the mentioned sectors;

  • Beyond 15% reduction of waste generation which means a reduction of 170,298 Ktonnes per year is expected.
  • Beyond 12% gains in productivity for waste treatment which means 30.36 million tonnes per year of usable waste and 2,500 Million Euors per year is expected.
  • Beyond 20% in energy efficiency and associated GHG savings are expected.

Tackling ‘grand’ or societal challenges

The issue of waste management and the reduction of industry-borne environmental impacts has been on the agenda and developed for many years in Europe by industrialists and science circles. The European Union sets its policies on waste management in the light of the principles of "zero waste" and "circular economy". For this reason, the establishment and sustainability of industrial co-existence networks has become an important goal. Good waste management practices in our country are becoming increasingly widespread and numerous examples of applications and research are seen.

Industrial Innovation (including innovation in services as well as products and processes)

The industrial symbiosis case studies and the information and communication technology platform, with an approach of life cycle, will provide a guidance for the industry in terms of prevention and reduction of wastes and the dissemination of similar applications.

Project outputs will enable a waste utilization methodology that reduces environmental impacts through the life cycle in the field of industrial applications as well as the development of a map-aided system of which wastes can be obtained from.

Research-influenced changes in policy, agenda-setting

It is aimed to give a new approach on industrial symbiosis projects in Turkey and to increase the access of industrial representatives to waste disposal methods and demonstration examples.

In the project, the data obtained during the production of new ecological cement, green concrete, innovative ceramic tile and rubber wood plastic composites by using the industrial by-products and wastes will contribute to the realization of "circular economy" in terms of creating demonstration areas in our local industry.

The improved exercise of professional skill

Industrial symbiosis case studies and guidance to be provided by the information and communication technologies platform to be established within the project are expected to encourage industrialists to improve their knowledge and skills in the prevention and reduction of waste.

Human capital development

The implementation of FISSAC solutions could have contributed to EU 300,000 additional jobs creation.
