On February 11, 2025, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will host a webinar to highlight the contributions of women in STEM and explore strategies to enhance their participation across the Euro-Mediterranean region. The event will address progress, challenges, and the role of gender equality in science as a driver of socio-economic development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Despite progress in recent decades, in the Mediterranean region achieving gender equality in science remains a challenge. Vertical and horizontal segregation persist, even in countries with gender parity among researchers. According to UNESCO, 57% of STEM graduates in the MENA region are women, yet systemic barriers continue to limit their roles in leadership, innovation, and science diplomacy.

A UfM report on Science and Innovation Diplomacy in the Mediterranean highlights women's remarkable achievements in research, policymaking, and leadership. It also emphasizes the need for greater support to expand their roles in science diplomacy through capacity-building and systemic change.

This webinar provides a platform to celebrate accomplishments, share good practices, and chart actionable steps to further support women in science and innovation for regional prosperity.
