The ERC - European Research Council funds creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run frontier projects across Europe.
We are happy to announce that Assoc. Prof. Arzucan ÖZGÜR from Boğaziçi University Department of Computer Engineering has been selected for funding with a budget of 2 Million EUR in the ERC-2022-CoG call under the Horizon Europe Programme.
We congratulate our eminent researcher and her host institution.
Assoc. Prof. Arzucan ÖZGÜR
ERC 2022 CoG Principle Investigator
Host Institution: Boğaziçi University
Project title: LifeLU: Understanding the Language of Life: Identifying and Characterizing the Language Units in Protein Sequences
Proje Budget: 2 Million €
Panel: PE6 - Computer Science and Informatics
Proteins play a key role in biological processes that maintain life. Although they are three-dimensional molecules, they can be represented in textual form as sequences of amino acids that can be considered to be written in a specific language, also called the language of life. In LifeLU Project Assoc. Prof. Arzucan ÖZGÜR and her team aims to provide a basis for a better understanding of the language of life by developing innovative methods to identify the smallest units of information in proteins (which are analogous to words in human languages) and to determine their meaning (functions). ÖZGÜR's project proposal was supported within the scope of TÜBİTAK's ERC Principal Investigator Advancement Program.
Türkiye hosts 36 ERC Grants in total.
