A study conducted by the Union for the Mediterranean has found that the number of female STEM graduates in the Mediterranean region is rapidly increasing, exceeding 50% in countries such as Syria and Tunisia. However, when it comes to leadership, it is observed that a “glass ceiling” persists everywhere, and it is emphasized that at the EU level, women account for only 26% of heads of higher education institutions.
This gender gap is considered a loss for Euro-Mediterranean science and innovation.
For these reasons, on 23 April 2026, the Union for the Mediterranean will organize a webinar to highlight the contributions of women in STEM and to explore how gender-sensitive leadership in academia can help remove structural barriers and accelerate broader social change across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
