3 ERC Principle Investigators in Turkey have been selected for funding with a total budget of 0.45 million €  in the latest ERC Proof of Concept Call which aims to support researchers explore the commercial or societal potential of the results of their research projects. Among these successful researchers two is especially important since they will set an example in the field of social sciences and humanities both in Turkey and abroad.

We congratulate our eminent researchers and their host institutions. 


The Proof of Concept project of Assoc. Prof. Erdem YÖRÜK from Sociology Department in Koc University will provide real-time, retroactive, and statistically representative data on society and politics by using social media and other big data sources and it is the first project to receive this support in the field of sociology from Turkey. YÖRÜK’s proposal was supported by the TÜBİTAK's ERC Principal Investigator Advancement Program.

In his Proof of Concept Project Assoc. Prof. Mustafa Erdem KABADAYI from History Department in Koc University will analyze radical land use and land cover segmentation from the 1940s to the present in the area including the cities of Istanbul, Edirne, and Plovdiv by associating them with population dynamics, and predict possible agricultural population loss, agricultural land abandonment and deforestation in the 2040s. KABADAYI’s project is the second PoC project from social sciences and humanities domain.

Project Title: GeoAI_LULC_Seg: A GeoAI-based Land Use Land Cover Segmentation Process to Analyse and Predict Rural Depopulation, Agricultural Land Abandonment, and Deforestation in Bulgaria and Turkey, 1940-2040

The proof of concept project of Asst. Prof. Prof. Mehmet Cengiz ONBAŞLI from Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Physics Departments in Koc University will aim to manufacture and commercialize highly sensitive new quantum light sensors, one of the most critical research areas of the 21st century. These new sensors are of great importance for the success and diffusion of quantum computers and quantum internet technology.

Project Title: SuperPHOTON: 2D Topological Superconducting Single Photon Detector Devices

Principle Investigator: Mehmet Cengiz Onbaşlı (Koc University)

Total budget: 150.000 €
