The ERC - European Research Council funds creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run frontier projects across Europe.

2 researchers in Turkey have been selected for funding with a total budget of 4.9 Million EUR in 2021 ERC Advanced Grant call under the Horizon Europe Programme.

Among these researcher Assoc. Prof. Dr. F. Ömer İLDAY is the second double grantee in Turkey. His first ERC project NLL was supported in 2013 ERC Consolidator Grant call.

We congratulate our eminent researchers and their host institutions.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. F. Ömer İLDAY

ERC 2021 Advanced Grant Principle Investigator

Host Institution: Ihsan Dogramaci Bilkent University – UNAM

Project tittle: UniLase - Second-modelocking for a universal material-processing laser

Project budget: 2.5 Million €

Panel: PE7 - Systems and Communication Engineering

Prof. Dr. Tolga Mete DUMAN

ERC 2021 Advanced Grant Principle Investigator

Host Institution: Ihsan Dogramaci Bilkent University

Project tittle: TRANCIDS - Transmission over Channels with Insertions and Deletions

Project budget: 2.4 Million €

Panel: PE7 - Systems and Communication Engineering

In UniLase Project Assoc. Prof. Dr. F. Ömer İLDAY and his team aims to create a laser unlike others to date and to generate a crystal of light – a perfectly periodic array of ultrafast pulses that are self-assembled and held together by their mutual interactions. İLDAY aims to advance our fundamental understanding of complex systems with implications that may reach well beyond laser physics. In 2017 İLDAY was awarded the TÜBİTAK Science Award. His project proposal was supported within the scope of TÜBİTAK's ERC Principal Investigator Advancement Program. Last but not least he İLDAY become our second researcher in Turkey to be awarded an ERC for the second time.

In TRANCIDS Project Prof. Dr. Tolga Mete DUMAN and his team will take on the grand challenge of addressing the effects of insertions and deletions caused by synchronization errors over various communication channels by developing theoretical limits of transmission and by designing practical channel coding solutions approaching these limits. The findings of the project will impact different emerging applications such as DNA storage and beyond 5G wireless communications. DUMAN's project proposal was supported within the scope of TÜBİTAK's ERC Principal Investigator Advancement Programme.

Together with the results of the previously published 2021 Starting Grant and 2021 Consolidator Grant calls, a total of 8 researchers from Turkey were entitled to be supported with a total budget of 16.2 Million Euros in the 2021 calls. Among the ERC calls 2021 call was the most successful one for Turkey so far. Within the scope of the call, 253 researchers from host institutions in EU Member and Associated countries were awarded.

Turkey hosts in total 31 ERC Grants.
