The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) is an EU Institutionalized Partnership established to address critical challenges such as water scarcity and food security in the Mediterranean region.
Since its inception, PRIMA, to which our country has also been participating, has been pivotal in fostering scientific cooperation among EU, North African, and Middle Eastern countries. Initially set to conclude under the Horizon 2020 framework in 2028, PRIMA's activities have been extended under the Horizon Europe framework (2025-2027) by EU Decision.
Preparing for future activities beyond 2027, the FUTURE4PRIMA project, funded under the Horizon Europe Program, aims to co-create and implement research and innovation initiatives within a renewed partnership under the upcoming Framework Program (FP10). This project will identify research and innovation priorities to address the intertwined challenges of climate change, pandemics, and conflicts impacting already strained resources (water, soil, energy). The Mediterranean region faces unique challenges that are expected to intensify due to these factors. Climate impacts, such as altered precipitation patterns and extreme weather events, combined with population growth, urbanization, and economic development, further strain already limited resources. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive understanding of the region's ecosystems, cultural heritage, and socio-economic conditions, which can be addressed through R&I collaborative initiatives.
The FUTURE4PRIMA Project has prepared a survey focused on identifying critical challenges and potential areas for innovation and cooperation in the Mediterranean region, emphasizing the water-energy-food-ecosystem Nexus approach. The survey is part of a comprehensive effort to gather insights from research funding organizations and the private sector. The results of the survey will guide the FUTURE4PRIMA consortium and the PRIMA initiative in identifying research and innovation priorities for the coming years and shaping the next phase of PRIMA 2 (2028-2035).
The feedback provided will inform thematic areas and priorities to address key issues in the Mediterranean while maintaining a focus on sustainable water management and food systems.
