The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) provides various scholarship and support programmes for scientists working in the field of life sciences. These programmes, which are financed by the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) provide grant, accommodation and networking support to the researchers.

Via Science Journalism Fellowships, EMBO provides funding to life scientists pursuing a career in science journalism and science journalists who wish to further their scientific education.

Eligibility:

  • For applicant life scientists, having a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or higher, and having published samples of any kind of their work in science journalism on topics related to basic biological research;

  • For applicant active science journalists, having a proven record of working full-time as employed or freelance science journalists and providing appropriate samples of their work;

  • Residing in one of the 31 EMBC Member States and applying for internships or volunteer positions in editorial offices or for stays in scientific institutions in the same or another of the EMBC Member States are required.

Programme Benefits:

  • Successful applicants receive a stipend, the amount of which depends on the cost of living in the country and the number of days the scholarship holders spend pursuing the activity for which they have applied, to cover their living expenses as well as travel and labour costs.

  • For scientists preparing for a career as a science journalist, the duration of the fellowship is between 3 and a maximum of 12 months.

  • For journalists who spend time at a research institute as part of the fellowship, the maximum duration of the fellowship is 3 months.

  • The scholarships can be combined with other grants or income from freelance work.

Application:

  • Applications must be made directly to EMBO through the application system.

  • Applications are accepted throughout the year. The selection of fellows and the awarding of fellowships takes place three times a year: all complete applications received by 1 February, 1 June or 1 October will be considered. All applicants will be notified no later than 4 weeks after the respective selection deadline.
