“We have received a question on topic HORIZON-CL5-2026-09-D2-01 – Producing battery-grade materials for electrodes through sustainable processing and refining of raw materials or developing bio-based materials (BATT4EU Partnership).
Question: Could you clarify what is expected under the term ‘validation’ in the sentence "Validation of economic viability, environmental sustainability, and technological robustness of the proposed refining and processing solutions?
Reply: For proposals under category 1 of the topic, the validation is expected to focus primarily on the proposed refining and processing solution, including its technological robustness, economic viability, and environmental sustainability. This should include evidence that the process can reliably produce battery-grade metals or materials meeting the requirements of the targeted battery chemistry.
Appropriate characterisation of the resulting materials is therefore relevant where needed to establish their battery-grade quality and suitability for the intended application. However, the topic does not require, as a general condition, downstream cathode/anode synthesis or electrochemical cell testing. The extent of such activities should be proportionate to the proposed technology and material and should support the validation of the refining and processing solution.
For category 2 though, as explained in the topic text, the following is expected to be delivered: “Comprehensive characterization and validation of developed electrode materials in sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery cells, demonstrating comparable or superior performance to conventional graphite electrodes, specifically targeting cycle stability, energy density, and charge/discharge rates.”
