Cumeri

Summary of the project

The overall objective of CUMERI is to develop and demonstrate advanced and customised membrane systems for enhanced recovery of valuable components and improved energy efficiency at industrial facilities, while lowering CO2 emissions.

  • Objective 1: Develop enhanced membranes for outstanding gas separation performances
  • Objective 2: Develop finetuned ceramic membranes for used lubricant oil (ULO) and additives recycling
  • Objective 3: Demonstrate at TRL7 the performance of the membrane systems for a more resilient and greener industry
  • Objective 4: Develop advanced modelling and simulation to provide guidance for the selection of membrane systems
  • Objective 5: Ensure the sustainability of the demonstrated membrane systems (including end-of-life considerations)
  • Objective 6: Ensure maximum exploitation of CUMERI results for wide and rapid market penetration

Scientific Output/Outcome Expected From the Project

  • Smart solutions for a greener industry (EO1): >12 endusers integrating CUMERI’s membranes overall, resulting in 800 t CO2/y avoided.
  • Energy and resource efficiency (EO2, 4): 6% of H2 produced in the steel industry in EU recovered; 12% of EU re-refined base oil; 92% energy savings vs. traditional rerefining.
  • Advanced materials with superior properties and stability (EO3): Increased  selectivities/fluxes/rates and lifetimes, decreased costs for all membranes; >5 material/membrane manufacturers producing CUMERI’s membranes.
  • Membrane’s circularity (EO5): Best suitable way of recycling each of the three membranes for ensuring minimal end-of-life issues.

Target Group of the Project

  • Industries: >5 Material/Membrane manufacturers; >12 End-users; >10 EPCs; >15 industrial stakeholders
  • Scientific community: >100 researchers in the fields of advanced materials, membrane separation, modelling, and sustainability assessment.
  • Policy makers: >20 for facilitating decision making.
  • The general public: for increasing awareness, ca. 450 citizens impacted overall.
