pop-machina

POP-MACHINA aims to demonstrate the power and potential of the maker movement and collaborative production for the EU circular economy. We draw from a number of cut-edge technologies (factory-of-the-future, blockchain) and disciplines (urban planning, architecture) to provide the support necessary to overcome scaling issues; a typical drawback of collaborative production; to find the areas more in need of our intervention and to reconfigure unused spaces. We put forth an elaborate community engagement program to network, incentivize and stimulate through maker fairs, events existing, and new maker communities in all our municipalities. We build upon the current informal curriculum for maker skills development by nurturing the social side and we put educators and makers together to exchange ideas on the training modalities. A particular focus on the skill development of women and vulnerable groups will aim to empower these (underrepresented) segments to partake actively in collaborative production. In every pilot area we will demonstrate business oriented collaborative production of feasible and sustainable concepts from secondary raw material or other sustainable inputs, based on the needs and preferences of the local stakeholders. A thorough impact assessment framework with increased scope (e.g., social) will be co- designed with stakeholders after short basic assessment trainings and will be used in the assessment of our pilot work. Based on the findings we will kick-start a series of policy events to discuss openly – without pushing our results – the tax and legal barriers that hamper collaborative production.
Pop-Machina seeks to highlight and reinforce the links between the maker movement and circular economy to promote environmental sustainability and generate socio-economic benefits in European cities. Circular economy is a promising alternative to existing linear production and consumption patterns that generate enormous waste and have a huge negative impact on the environment overall. Circular use of material, through for example recycling and reusing, can reduce the generation of waste as well as our dependence on extraction or import of raw materials. As such, it has the potential to bring about significant environmental and economic benefits. Maker movement brings together individuals engaged in do-it-yourself (DIY) activities, sparking communities all over the world. These communities typically create products from waste materials or re-assembly products that are discarded, broken or unused. The movement has grown rapidly in the recent decades, benefitting from the expansion of open workshops (makerspaces), the increase of availability and affordability of digital fabrication tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters, and the prosumer trend in general. Maker movement is one of the most promising agents for driving the transition of cities to a more circular economy model and so holds great potential for urban regeneration, improved sustainability, social welfare, and cohesion.

The objectives of Pop-Machina is to,

  • Demonstrate the power and potential of the maker movement and collaborative production for the EU circular economy
  • Support the implementation of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan
  • Contribute to the growth of maker ecosystems and the production of circular innovations in European cities
  • Mobilise citizens under the banner of circular economy and collaborative production
  • Empower communities to innovate and make their cities more resilient and adaptive to socio-economic and environmental challenges

Pop-Machina also aims to create a detailed community engagement to network with existing and new initiatives in municipalities, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as (factory-of-the future) and (blockchain) and disciplines such as urban planning and architecture. The priority of the project is the emergence of new products with high added value and recyclable, using the latest waste management technologies by the local people and ensuring socio-economic development.

Pop-Machina is a 48-month project with 23 partners, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Program. The project supports the circular economy and co-production by creating makerspaces and empowering maker communities. Istanbul is one of the 7 pilot cities. (Other pilot cities: Santander-Spain, Venlo-Netherlands, Thessaloniki-Greece, Piraeus-Greece, Lueven-Belgium, Kaunas-Lithuania )
