The aim of the RHINOCEROS project is to develop economically and environmentally viable routes for re-using and recycling end-of-life LIBs from electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. Within the project, these innovative solutions will be tested and demonstrated in industrially relevant.
Scientific/Social/Economic/Innovative Contribution
- New breakthrough scientific discovery on repurposing and reusing LIBs for second-life applications
- Recycling of all the materials present in LIBs, such as metals, graphite, fluorinated compounds and polymers, active materials, etc.
- Sustainable, safe, low-carbon footprint technologies
- Zero liquid waste discharge process
- Strengthened resilience, lowered dependency on CRMs imports required by the emerging European green growth
Importance in Solving Global Problems
It offers alternative solutions to the supply chain of these materials and the high carbon emission problems of battery production by enabling critical materials (Lithium, Cobalt, Manganese, etc.) used in battery production to be obtained from waste batteries and reused.
Industrial Innovation (including innovation in services as well as products and processes)
- Development of intelligent systems that can autonomously classify and disassemble waste battery packs
- Establishment of a secondary use energy storage system from waste batteries.
- Development of cost-effective, flexible and environmentally friendly recycling processes
- Conducting risk, environmental, safety, cost and cost analysis of the methods to be developed and measuring their performance
- Using recycled materials in the production of high performance electrodes, thereby demonstrating circularity and exploring the social, environmental and economic benefits
Research-induced Changes in National Policies and Strategies
Bringing the developed know-how to Turkey and ensuring its integration with the local industry.
Its Effect on Foreign Dependency and Current Account Deficit
Since the reserves of elements such as Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel and Manganese, which are battery critical elements, are scarce in our country compared to other countries, it creates an important opportunity to support the automotive sector by creating an independent battery production ecosystem in Turkey with battery critical materials recovered through recycling methods to be developed, and to enrich this ecosystem with foreign investors and to reduce both foreign and current account deficit.
Contribution to the Development of Professional Skills and Professional Abilities
Throughout the project, the development of high-tech products and processes, especially in the fields of autonomous systems, electrochemical, hydrometallurgical processes, electrical and electronics, provides world-class professional expertise
Contribution to the Development of Human Resources
The project outputs will shed light on the articles to be published at the academic level and increase the qualified workforce with master's / doctoral studies..
