CARDIMED aims to build climate resilience in the Mediterranean biogeographical region by providing a framework that effectively combines the individual efforts of regions and communities across different countries and continents. This goal will be achieved through the implementation of digital infrastructure, aligning data collection and evaluation processes, providing open data to all stakeholders in the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) value chain, and integrating critical functions for climate resilience. Among these functions are smart digital tools supporting citizen engagement and capacity building, completing an ambitious multi-stakeholder participation strategy focused on knowledge translation and impact pathways. Additionally, holistic modeling tools introducing the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus approach will provide comprehensive information on complex NBS interfaces and contribute decisively to addressing socio-ecological challenges, as well as solving valuation and low investment rate issues in NBS.
These actions will be implemented through 47 NBS directly linked to 9 application sites, covering 10 regions, 20 locations, and 28 communities, addressing climate change and circularity challenges, and supported by 83 intervention and support units. The project will also include 10 additional cases, to be identified during implementation, alongside 5 transferability cases. Through these actions, the project plans to reach at least 28 regions and 70 communities by 2030.
