Scientific Outputs

  • Develop Contemporary FM Band Channel Models
  • Support relay channeling for longer coverage
  • Verify the models via the measurements

Tackling ‘grand’ or societal challenges

This novel research will fulfil the general objectives of the call program “Excellent Science" and "Industrial leadership" as it lays down the groundwork for potential future wireless systems, which are vital for the long-term success and excellence of Europe. The development of the channel models will always be a top priority for the wireless research as long as wireless generations are developed. As the novel research will be one of the first that will introduce standard directional channel models for the FM Band, new opportunities for the governments and the cellular operators to offer new efficient services in this precious band will arise. Especially when used by public safety services, large coverage areas will be provided, which in turn will have a direct impact on the safety of the civilians across the whole Europe. Therefore the objective of “Science with and for society” will also be met.

Industrial Innovation (including innovation in services as well as products and processes)

This novel research will

(a) have Europe to continue to dominate in directional channel modeling in a precious band, FM, since Europe with the initiatives in COST channel modeling is already in the leading position in the world,

(b) enable innovative devices to be developed in this band, and hence giving Europe a leading edge, (c) enable a connected Europe with less number of base stations, due to large coverage of the FM Band,

(d) have the lawmakers or the frequency regulation agencies to re-think the utilization of the FM Band

(e) provide alternative economical wireless access schemes for the third world countries which are typically rural.

Research-influenced changes in policy, agenda-setting

The models will be based on the specification of directional channel impulse response functions, large and small channel effects. The measurement campaigns will be carried out via channel sounders. Thus, we will have the first standard directional channel models of the FM Band.

The provision of Improved Public Goods

The newly introduced models will then be validated through field trials, and will be able to support the parameters of the contemporary wireless systems with multiple antennae.

The improved exercise of professional skill

The directional channel models will be developed through (i) geometrical (ray tracing) and (ii) tapped delay line (parametric stochastic modelling) approaches by considering 2-D (time and angular) channel impulse response. The models will be based on the specification of directional channel impulse response functions, large and small channel effects. The measurement campaigns will be carried out via channel sounders. Thus, we will have the first standard directional channel models of the FM Band.

Human capital development

The goal is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers at all career levels by creating opportunities for cross-border and cross-sector mobility. Key activities shall be to encourage experienced researchers to broaden or deepen their skills by means of mobility by opening attractive career opportunities in universities, research institutions, research infrastructures, businesses, SMEs and other socio-economic groups all over Europe and beyond.
