Project Abstract
Cataracts are the most prevalent reason of vision loss in the world. Surgery is the only option for Cataracts and it is the most frequently performed surgery worldwide. However, how the patient will see after surgery and what type of replacement intraocular lens (IOL) is the best option cannot be known. In this project, computational holography, which can control phase, size and shape of the light beam entering through the eye-pupil, will be utilized to develop a holographic vision simulator for cataract patients. This will be the first cataract simulator for in-vivo testing of multifocal IOLs. We'll develop and perform clinical studies of the novel instrument on patients.
Scientific Output/Product/Outcome expected from the project
Scientific publications, TRL 7 level Cataract Simulation Platform, patent, pre-clinical testing and verified results.
Target Group of the Project
Ophthalmology clinics, Eye Specialists
Importance in Tackling Big Global Problems:
Vision loss creates significant burdens on health services, payment systems, and social aspects. It is expected that patients with cataracts will decide to have surgery earlier and choose the right intraocular lens with more accurate vision simulation. Thus, reimbursement and social costs will be reduced.
Scientific/Social/Economic Innovative Contribution (including innovation in services as well as products and processes)
The first use of Computational Holography technology in the field of Vision testing is an important innovation. Multiple Images at several different depths would be displayed in one eye at the same time, and contrast and visual artifact tests would be performed.
Contribution to the Development of Professional Skills and Professional Skills
The application of holography technology in the field of vision tests and simulation will be an important gain for our country Türkiye in terms of scientific and intellectual property.
Contribution to the Development of Human Resources,
A large number of Masters, Doctoral Students and Post-Doctoral researchers are working on the project. It contributes to the cultural and social development of researchers as well as the development of their scientific knowledge, by doing their thesis with an international partnered project, and also their participation in national and international congresses.
