PV4PLANTS:AgriPV system with climate, water and light spectrum control for safe, healthier and improved crops production

Keywords: agrivoltaics, concentrator, glass, novel, PV panels, circularity, reusability, user acceptability, adaptability, scalable, crops physiology, crops health indicators, accelerated testing

The PV4PLANTS project aims to increase the synergy between energy and agriculture by using agrivoltaic (agriPV) technologies to enhance plant growth conditions, land use, crop yields, and renewable energy production. The project includes designs that can be adapted to different climate conditions and product varieties in Turkey, Spain, and Denmark to meet the need for healthy harvests. Real-time multi-indicator monitoring system will be used to optimize parameters such as the tilt of solar panels, irrigation level, and fertilizer amount to continuously improve the microclimate. Additionally, the project is an important strategic effort to accelerate the adoption of agrivoltaic technology in Europe through innovative strategies, new financing schemes, and business models to improve investment performance. The PV4PLANTS project will be certified with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), ISO 14021 compliance, and the Sustainability Excellence Label awarded by UNEF. The project aims to optimize renewable energy production and protect plants from hydraulic and thermal stresses. The target audience for the project includes communities, public entities, civil society and industry organizations, and research institutions.

The PV4PLANTS project will develop a multi-purpose innovative agriPV system using PV panels produced with glass-based color converter (GCC) technology, a rainwater collection system, a mounting structure, an integrated control system for irrigation and optimization (including energy storage if necessary). This system will be developed in three pilot regions with different geographic and climate conditions: Turkey, Spain, and Denmark. The main innovation in the project is the production of GCC by spraying nanoparticles onto the panel glass. This coating will allow plants to adapt and optimize the spectrum of light absorbed. The effects of different GCC panel configurations on various plants will be studied, and the best luminescence value will be used for installation in the pilot regions. An optimization algorithm will be developed to control the tilt angle of the PV panels and the irrigation system in real-time. This will optimize the efficiency of available resources such as water and fertilizer, and local renewable electricity production and consumption. The PV4PLANTS project plays an important role in accelerating the transition to sustainable agriculture and expanding the application areas of agriPV systems. Through this project, the development and widespread use of agriPV systems will be achieved, resulting in an increase in employment rates due to the growing demand for human resources.
